Keeping your Aquarium Cool

Keeping your Aquarium Cool

If you live in a southern area it can be difficult to keep the temperature in your aquarium low enough. You could leave on the air conditioner in the room but if you are not at home for long periods this is an expensive way to cool down your aquarium fish tank! A cheaper way, and much better for the environment too, is to use an aquarium chiller.

Although they are expensive they will more than pay for themselves in the long run. They are practically maintenance free and do not even need to be cleaned or have any replaceable parts.

Guide to Purchasing a Chiller

We recommend that you buy a chiller that is designed for a tank slightly larger than the one you are placing it in. A slightly more powerful chiller is only slightly more expensive but using a more powerful chiller than recommended will not only increase it’s life but will be quieter.

What Temperature do you Need to Maintain?

In a reef aquarium the temperature needs to be suitable for the live corals depends on the natural environment of the corals. Corals should all come from the same environment so that you can maintain the ideal temperature for all of them. If you have corals from mixed environments aim to keep the temperature between about 75 and 85 degrees.

Other methods for Cooling an Aquarium

cheaper alternatives include using a fan in the hotter months to blow cool air over the water surface. Cutting down the time that the lights are on can also help to keep the water cool.

IceProbe Thermoelectric Aquarium Chiller
This is the ideal cooling solution for small aquariums–55 gallons or less. This quiet, reliable efficient chiller uses advanced thermoelectric technology to directly convert electricity into cooling power. Can be easily bulkheaded through a 1 14 in. hole into siphon overflows, prefilters, sumps or even directly into plastic aquariums. Provides continuous chilling when plugged in to a power source, it does not have a on/off switch. A separate temperature controller must be used to turn the device on or off at pre-determined temperatures.
